The Better way to your destination

  • Sustainability

Our solutions comply with environmental standards and so does our organization. We are fully aware of the importance of maintaining the planet’s resources and apply sustainability into our projects. This is reflected in the development of energy-efficient and energy-autonomous solutions, reduction of fuel usage by the design of smaller, lighter on-board solutions and the use of more reliable materials in the manufacturing process.

  • Quality

Luminator’s facilities maintain a well-established and documented quality management system (QMS) in accordance with a variety of standards including: AS9100D, ISO9001:2015, ASO100A and FAA Title 14 CFR §21.303. Detailed descriptions of each process are addressed through individual, top-level quality procedures. For accreditation for a specific manufacturing facility, or product, please contact us.

We subject our QMS to annual accreditation surveillance audits and quarterly 3rd party audits plus monthly internal audits to ensure the QMS is performing to its highest level.

As part of the QMS, our US team utilizes an online corrective action database to capture opportunities for improvement. Corrective action submittals are reviewed by cross functional team then followed up to verify effectiveness. The corrective action system covers corrective action requests/reports (CARs), preventative action requests (PARs), supplier corrective action requests (SCARs), and Failure Analysis (FA) report.

Quality training is core to our success. Employees are trained at the beginning of their employment and throughout their tenure at Luminator. We strive to maintain their competence level for building quality into the product. We have many specialty areas including certified FAA DMIRs, and personnel with customer ODA status.

  • Certifications

Our certification group ensures product compliance of a wide range of regulatory and industry standards as well as customer specific requirements. The Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, European Road Administration and national regulations are the backbone of our products — with world class product safety as the result.

Meticulous and robust reliability testing provides our customers with solutions that perform well beyond warranty in the harshest segments of the transportation industry. Our US facility has an accredited laboratory where more than 80% of our qualification needs, including FAA and Boeing certification, are performed.

Our 90+ year presence in the transit industry demonstrates our commitment to excellent performance with a strong focus on quality assurance to meet or exceed customer requirements. Luminator Technology Group (Luminator) has widely recognized global certifications including:

    • ISO/IEC 170252017 Accredited (PJLA #84491) Testing
    • IRIS Certification
    • CMMI Certification
    • ISO 9001:2015 Certification
    • ISO 27001 Certification
  • Reliability

The Luminator Reliability Process was developed in 2004 which provides world class product assessment, reliability test program development, testing and evaluation to the aerospace, defense, mass transit, heavy transportation and the electronics industries. Our customers span the globe and our process has been used successfully to introduce solutions into application environments which range from the harshest exposures on high performance aircraft to complex mobile electronic systems on buses and railcars.

    History, Facts, Key Figures

    1928
    Founding History

Engineer Albert Arenburg had an idea: sleeping cars should only to be lit where necessary – to avoid disturbing passengers in their sleep. That would significantly enhance travel comfort. Luminator has preserved this basic idea until the present day: making public transport more attractive with innovations.

    • 1933
      First order

The opportunity finally came at the “Century of Progress” world exhibition in Chicago. Arenburg convinced a manufacturer of rail cars of his idea, and Luminator had its first major customer. Today, Luminator is a reliable supplier of innovative lighting solutions in transportation.

    • 1970
ARRIVAL OF THE FLIP DOT DISPLAY

Destination boards at this time were static signs displayed at the front of the vehicle. At the end of the run, the driver had to hop off and change them manually. Subsequent roller blind displays were rotated with a crank, and flip dot displays provided increased efficiency: The lettering was digitally controlled and automatically changed.

    • 1980
      Arrival of the “YELLOW BOX”

Ten years later, the programming of flip dots became more efficient. Up until then, in the event of route changes, chips had to be removed, deleted, newly programmed and re-installed. The patented solution was a portable, electrically erasable and easy-to-program memory unit. New destinations could be relayed directly to the control interface.

      DCU is opened

Starting shot for the display center in Neu-Ulm, Germany: here our engineers are engaged in refining new and proven processes in display manufacturing, modification and finishing.
